Do Not Become a Stump: A Message for Parents of Children with Special Needs

While all parenting demands a certain degree of selflessness, caring for a child or children with special needs can leave parents feeling like the stump from The Giving Tree. Remember that as a stump, “The tree was happy, but not really.” In order to take care of others, it is imperative to take care of yourself.

Whether you are just beginning your journey or are many years in, parents often experience:

  • Guilt about not doing enough

  • Sadness about missing out on typical experiences

  • Guilt about feeling sad

  • Worries about the present

  • Worries about the future

  • Conflicts with spouses or family members about decision making and coping styles

As busy as you are, make time to take care of your mental health. As a clinical psychologist of 13 years, I have experience to help you manage your anxiety, depression, anger, and relationships. As a parent of two children with special needs, I have walked in your shoes. I accept insurance and have flexibility to work with you as an individual and with your family as a whole. I look forward to working together.
